Industry favorites, Elbow have emerged as relative underdogs and beaten bookies favorite – the elusive Burial – to the Mercurty Prize 2008. Their fourth studio album, The Seldom Seen Kid, was unbeliveably overlooked by mainstream media – but perhaps this isn’t such a bad thing. Personally I’m delighted. Radiohead’s album In Rainbows is phenomonal and epic by all accounts, but maybe Radiohead are just too globally successful to win an industry award that has historically favoured the underdog. The Elbow album also has powerful epic undertones but in an altogether more subtle way. It’s delicatly and thoughfully put together sound conveys the time proceess that went into its making from start to finish.
